Proud
to be a Farmer
Last Sunday, 7th June, Washingpool Farm took part in the National
Event, Open Farm Sunday, it was our second year of participation.
A great sucess it turned out to be. After a night of heavy rain,
the sun shined and a gentle breeze dried things out for an enjoyable
day. The tractor and trailer rides proved a big hit, with children
and adults! The ride took you round the lakes, through narrow
tracks seeing the 'Ruby Red' beef animals, past crops including
lettuce, beans and sweetcorn, finishing up with pigs sun bathing
in their paddocks. A BBQ with our own and local meat and rolls
was provided. Kevin and Rachel Goodfellow provided a fascinating
display of sheep shearing, whilst Dave and Roly showed their vintage
machinery at work in the fields. Sharon was on hand to provide
visitors with an insight into her daily tasks of looking ofter
the polytunnels, sowing seeds and harvesting produce to sell in
our farm shop and restaurant.
The day offered visitors a unique opportunity to discover at first
hand the story behind our food and to meet those who grow and
produce it. I was very proud of the farm and the staff that help
run it. The biggest thrill was that the general public were interested
in how their food was produced. Lets make it bigger and better
next year.
